Kew Technik has introduced the SOK 72, a rugged range of three-phase testers designed to clearly indicate the direction of rotation of 400V three-phase electrical power supplies.
Determining the direction of rotation and the presence of all three
phases of a supply is essential before a piece of plant or machinery is
connected. Incorrect phase rotation or a missing phase can cause
machinery to run backwards, potentially leading to serious damage to the
equipment and injury to operators.
The microprocessor controlled SOK 72 uses bright LEDs and clear audible tones to indicate the direction of rotation of the phases and the presence of all three phases, enabling the tester to be used in awkward or poorly lit locations.
A tough, splashproof rubber casing protects the tester from knocks while the front is made from durable polycarbonate. Straightforward colour coding of the LEDs and improved graphics make the SOK 72 easy to use, while an automatic self test function ensures a correct result every time.
Each tester comes complete with fused test leads in accordance with HSE guidance note GS 38 and Supply Industry Engineering recommendation M15/4. Every instrument also comes with a complete set of crocodile clips or probes, enabling electricians to use the instrument with their own preferred arrangement.
There are two versions of the new tester: SOK 72UK and SOK 72EU.
The SOK 72UK comes with leads, crocodile clips and probes in the standard UK phase colours of blue, red and yellow and tri-coloured LEDs.
The presence of each phase is indicated by an LED of the appropriate colour, and clockwise rotation of the phases produces a clockwise rotation of the LEDs and a continuous tone. Anti-clockwise rotation of the phases is indicated by the LEDs rotating anti-clockwise and an intermittent tone.
The SOK 72EU is future-proofed against the impending European harmonisation of phase colours. Instead of the UK's phase colours, the SOK 72EU has red leads, crocodile clips and probes, each clearly labelled L1, L2 and L3.
The SOK 72EU uses bi-coloured LEDs to indicate phase rotation. Correct wiring and clockwise rotation of the phases produces three green LEDs rotating clockwise accompanied by a continuous tone. Phases rotating in the opposite direction are indicated by red LEDs rotating anti-clockwise and an intermittent tone.
These rugged, easy to use phase testers are a valuable addition to any electrician's toolbox, and are available from leading electrical wholesalers.
