Instant check on caravan site electrical supplies

There is now a quick and easy way to check the safety of site electrical supplies before connecting a caravan or mobile home - the Socket & See Caravan Site Test Kit from Kew Technik.

Instant check on caravan site electrical supplies

The test kit, based on Kew Technik's unique Socket & See SOK 40/I6HD test instrument, can be supplied with a range of adapters enabling it to be used with the vast majority of socket outlets found in the UK and Europe.

Using the appropriate adapter, the tester simply plugs into the socket outlet and in seconds carries out a range of key safety checks on the supply.

The SOK 40/I6HD is made from tough polycarbonate and protected by a rubber holster for heavy duty use. It is easy to use, with simple graphics, bright, long life LED's and a loud audible tone clearly indicating if the wiring is safe or if there is a fault.

Lighting of three green LED indicators and a continuous tone means the wiring is correct and safe to use, while amber or red LED's and a strong warbling tone indicates a problem that may require investigation by the site operator.

Faults detected by the SOK 40/1 6HD include reversed live/earth or live/neutral and a missing or faulty live, earth or neutral. Any of these conditions could damage a caravan's electrical system or lead to a potentially dangerous condition in the event of a fault, putting people using the caravan at risk of electric shock or fire.

Under BS 7671 (the IEE Wiring Regulations) caravan site operators are required to provide an adequate earth to caravans though the electrical connection and protect supply socket outlets with 30mA residual current devices (RCDs) to provide an additional safeguard against electric shock.

If, however, the earth is missing and an RCD is either not installed or not operating correctly, occupants of the caravan could be in danger if a live cable within the caravan came into contact with the metal structure.

This could happen if, for example, a screw or other fixing pierced a live conductor in the cable, insulation on a cable became chafed or an electrical connection worked loose during the journey.

In normal circumstances, a fault current would then flow to earth and the fuse or circuit breaker would immediately blow or trip and disconnect the supply.

However, this can only happen if there is an adequate earth path for the fault current to flow down. If there is no earth, the whole caravan could become live, and anyone touching it while also in contact with earth - by, for example, standing on damp grass in bare feet - could suffer a severe electric shock.

Pan-European version (model number SOK620EU) test kit
